The Cavern Diver course is designed to develop minimum skills and knowledge for cavern and overhead environment diving within the limits of light penetration and outline specific hazards associated with cave diving. This course is not intended to provide instruction on cave diving environments but a stepping stone towards the TDI Intro to Cave Diving Course.

What skills you will cover-

  • Properly deploy a guideline
  • Properly follow a guideline with eyes open and closed
  • Air share with a buddy following a guideline
  • Air share with a buddy following a guideline with lights out and eyes closed
  • Remove replace mask while maintaining contact with guideline
  • Demonstrate conservation, awareness and back referencing techniques 
  • Demonstrate hand/light signals with touch contact
  • Demonstrate anti silting techniques
  • Simulate primary light failure and use back up light for exit
  • Demonstrate buoyancy control, trim and finning techniques
  • Dive planning

Upon completion of the course you will be able to engage in cavern diving activities without direct supervision as long as the following guidelines are adhered to-

  • Planned dives are within divers training
  • Penetration is limited to the 'rule of thirds', or 1/6th if using doubles to a max depth of 40 metres
  • Penetration is limited to 61 linear metres from the surface
  • Proper cavern diving equipment must be used
  • Maintain a continuous guideline
  • No restrictions or areas that too small for 2 divers to swim side by side

Course prerequisites

  • Minimum age 18 or 15 with parental consent
  • Provide proof of Open Water certification or equivalent
  • Proof of 25 logged dives
